Charles Henry Gilbert Yukon diaries, 1920.

The collection consists of Charles Henry Gilbert's journals of a trip during the summer of 1920 to research salmon populations along the Yukon River. The journals cover the period from 8 May, when Gilbert and companion Henry O'Malley toured Vancouver, British Columbia, to 18 October, when the travelers returned to Palo Alto, California. In addition to travel details, the journals record observations on salmon and salmon fishing practices along the Yukon. Of particular concern was the size of the subsistence fish harvest and whether a commercial cannery would jeopardize such subsistence fishing. The collection also includes Gilbert's research notes concerning relevant findings of early Alaskan explorers.
